We tested all 11,185 legal openers against Streakle's answer list
CRANE is the opener almost everyone recommends, including our own in-game tip. Against Streakle's actual answer pool it finishes 197th out of 11,185.
How we got these numbers
Every one of the 11,185 guesses Streakle accepts was scored against all 601 unique words in the live answer pool. For each opener we computed the expected number of answers still standing after the colours come back, which is the sum of the squares of each colour pattern's bucket size divided by the pool size. Lower is better. The pool and the guess list are the ones shipped in the game, read straight out of src/lib/words.ts and src/lib/valid-words.ts.
Why a general-purpose Wordle opener is the wrong tool here
Opening word advice travels badly. The best opener for any guessing game depends entirely on the list of words that can actually be the answer, and every game curates that list differently. Streakle's pool is 601 unique five-letter words, hand-picked to ramp from friendly to brutal across a 30 puzzle run. It is not the Wordle list, it is not a dictionary, and it is not the frequency distribution of written English.
So we stopped guessing and measured. We took every one of the 11,185 words Streakle will accept as a guess, played each of them against all 601 possible answers, and recorded how many candidates would still be alive after the colours came back. An opener that leaves you 15 candidates has done roughly three times as much work as one that leaves you 45.
The results are not what the folklore says.
The ten strongest openers
Two things jump out. First, the top of the table is dominated by words built from R, O, A, T, E and I in various arrangements. Second, several of them are obscure. ROATE, SOARE, RAILE and OLATE are legal guesses in Streakle but they are not in the answer pool, so they can never be the word. That is a real trade-off, and we will come back to it.

Distinct outcomes is how many different colour patterns the opener can produce. Worst case is the size of the largest single bucket, which is the situation you most want to avoid.
Where the popular openers actually land
SALET and SOARE are the famous mathematically optimal Wordle openers, and SOARE holds up here at sixth. SALET slides to 51st, because Streakle's pool leans differently on S than the Wordle list does.
CRANE at 197th is the interesting one, because CRANE is the word our own in-game tip suggests. It is not a bad guess. It is comfortably in the top two percent of all legal openers. But it costs you about nine extra live candidates compared to ROATE, and in a game where level four onwards gives you only three guesses, nine candidates is the difference between a solve and a broken streak.
ADIEU and AUDIO are the ones to retire. Both chase vowels, and vowels are not where the information is. Only 1.2 percent of Streakle answers have no vowel at all and 57.6 percent have exactly two, so vowel placement is rarely the thing you are uncertain about. Consonants split the pool.

AUDIO leaves you 51 candidates on average. ROATE leaves you 15. Opening with AUDIO is close to skipping your first guess entirely.
The honest trade-off: obscure openers cannot win on turn one
ROATE, SOARE and TOILE are not in the answer pool. Opening with one of them means you have thrown away any chance of solving on guess one. Is that worth it?
For Streakle, mostly yes, and the reason is the guess budget. You get four guesses at levels one to three and three guesses from level four onward. Chasing a one-in-601 jackpot on turn one is a bad trade when a failed puzzle ends your entire run. But if you want the upside, there is a clean compromise.

IRATE is the answer. It is the fifth best opener in the entire legal guess list, only 1.8 candidates behind ROATE, and it can be the word. There is no strong argument for opening with anything else in Streakle.
What the very worst openers look like
For contrast, the bottom of the table is instructive about why repeated letters hurt so much. XVIII leaves 269 candidates alive on average. QAJAQ leaves 253. MAMMA leaves 242. A word with three copies of the same letter is spending three of its five slots asking the same question.
That is the same reason Streakle's own difficulty model penalises repeats. Its scoring function adds 2.4 points for every duplicated letter, which is more than the penalty for any single rare letter except X, J, Q and Z. Repeats are the single biggest driver of a hard Streakle word, and 25.5 percent of the answer pool contains one.
A practical opening plan
- Guess one: IRATE. Covers E, R, A, T and I, the five most common letters in the pool, and can win outright.
- Guess two: pick a word that tests five brand new letters if IRATE came back mostly grey. Good follow-ups are SONCE, CLOUD and NYMPH depending on what survived.
- From level four onwards you have three guesses, not four. Treat guess two as your last free exploration and commit from guess three.
- If two yellows come back in the same region of the word, prioritise relocating them over adding new letters. Position information is scarcer than letter information in a 601 word pool.
- Watch for repeats late in a run. The difficulty ramp deliberately pushes doubled letters into the higher levels, so a word that resists your normal approach at level six is disproportionately likely to have one.
Frequently asked questions
Is ROATE really a word?
It is a legal guess in Streakle, taken from the standard tournament word list, but it is not in the answer pool, so it can never be the solution. If that bothers you, IRATE gives up almost nothing and can win outright.
Why is CRANE so much worse here than in Wordle?
Because the answer pool is different. CRANE is excellent against the Wordle answer list. Streakle's 601 word pool leans harder on O, I and L and lighter on the C and N that CRANE is spending two letters on. Opener quality is a property of the list, not of the word.
Does the best opener change as my streak gets longer?
The opener does not change but the stakes do. From level four onwards Streakle drops you from four guesses to three, and a weak opener costs far more when you have one fewer chance to recover. See our companion piece on the three guess wall.
